Genital Herpes often has asymptomatic shedding and can happen for years.
Oral Herpes can shed for a few days to more than a week. Asymptomatic shedding is also present.
Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 are most contagious when sores are present. This is the time when the concentration of the virus is very high.
In the table below, we see the result from our Herpes PCR testing. The lower the Cq Value, the higher the concentration of the virus. At Day 3, viral concentration was very high in the presence of blisters. By day 7 , there were no blisters, however, we still detected it on the oral mucosa. By Day 13, the viral DNA was no longer detectable at the site of blister.
